A Corporation is a sovereign political entity. Since the last 2060s Corporations have been the only sovereign political entities on Earth. The legal definition of Corporation has altered significantly in recent decades, and so the capitalised form is used to strongly distinguish them from their predecessor corporations.

When the phrase "The Corporations" is used, it is normally referring to the Big Five. In 2074 every Corporation in the world is a subsidiary of one of the Big Five.

History

Organisations which were called corporations or were structured like corporations have existed back as far as the Roman Empire. During the medieval period, the largest corporation to exist prior to the 21st Century (the Catholic Church) spanned Europe. However, the birth of modern Corporations as we think of them today only really begins in 19th Century, post-revolution America. During that period the States of the former United States were involved in political competition to attract business and economy to their regions. This lead to a substantial relaxation in the restrictions on, taxation of and liability of corporations. By the 20th Century, corporations were paying less tax than individuals, passed almost no civil or criminal liability onto their owners, directors and employees, and had repeatedly been found difficult or impossible to prosecute due to the distributed or intangible liability.

The first truly significant development in corporate legality of the 21st Century was the introduction of Executive Trust Clauses in the 2010s.

Modern role

As the only sovereign political entities still existing, modern Corporations are completely responsible for government in human civilisation.

Names

Since the 2020s when the legal requirement was lifted it has been extremely unfashionable to include legal terms in the names of Corporations. With the widespread understanding of Public Relations in the 21st Century, Corporation names are always selected very carefully to engineer the desired response.
